Liisa of Charming Quark

Meet Liisa, 45, the editor of the inspiring Charming Quark blog. With a mixture of interiors, photography, and illustration, she manages to stimulate and entertain just the same.

Follow the link below for excellent advice on how to keep blogging fun and varied, and what to do when it's not anymore.

What's your name, how old are you, and what do you do for a living (or all day, for that matter)?

My name is Liisa, I am 45 years old and spend my days doing many things, some of which earn me money.

How long have you been blogging? How did you get around to blogging?

I've been blogging for ten years. I'd seen other people do it and liked the idea of making my writing accessible. Back then I would have never thought that I'd be sticking with it for so long, though.

What's your blog called and why?

Presently, I own two blogs.

One is called "Charming Quark" (http://www.charmingquark.de) - the name is a wordplay derived from the so-called 'Charm Quarks' (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quark_(Physik)#Charm-Quark) in Physics. I thought of them as Charming Quarks and ended up at Charming Quark, which in German may be translated to something like 'Lovely Blend'. I offer a varied yet straightforward mix of contents, that I hope to be a lovely blend. Well, I was young and... Today I'd probably call my blog something else, something a little more concise.

The other blog is called "Liisas Litblog" (http://www.litkara.de/litblog.php). There I post reviews of books that I read and stuff about literature.

What are you blogging about? Why?

I mainly blog about design, architecture, interior design, art, illustration, photography, music, social and political topics. To me, "Charming Quark" is something like a sketch book where I collect content that I like or that interests me. I could have kept all that to myself, of course, but I figured I might as well publish it on the Internet and make it available to like-minded people.

Who's your target audience?

I'm open to all: Whoever is interested in what I find and post is a welcome reader.

Who designed your blog? How much was that? In case you designed your own layout: Where did you learn how to?

Over the years, the design of my blog has changed many times. The very first layouts I did all by myself. I 'learned' that by trial and error, which took a lot of time but taught me much. These days I've been using a layout by Ben Eastaugh and Chris Sternal-Johnson called "Tarski" (http://tarskitheme.com/) that I have altered according to my personal needs.

"Liisas Litblog" is still based on a layout I did myself. It's what is left of a website called "Litkara" that I owned when I first started publishing on the Internet.

Which software and which host do you use? Can you recommend them?

"Charming Quark" is based on WordPress, "Liisas Litblog" on an easy, but very effective and stable blog software called XE-3. Both blogs are hosted by all-inkl.com (http://all-inkl.com/), that I've been very happy with: stable, affordable and they've got a great service, too.

What role play photos, MP3-files or video clips on your blog? If you use them, would you mind showing us one (please attach to this reply)?

Photos are very important, if not the most important, on my blog. I regularly use video clips, too: Each Friday I post one as part of a series called "Musik zum Wochenende" ["Music for the Weekend"]; now and then I also post short films. MP3s I don't use.

How many readers do you have? How many would you like to have? Does their number matter to you at all?

My Feed burner tells me I've got 270 to 300 regular readers, which is quite a lot, I think. But I don't know how many there are exactly. Naturally, I wouldn't mind more, especially of the ones that comment and participate. I prefer those to the ones that just quietly read along. Growing reader numbers are important as they are great motiviation. The incentive to draw something from my magic hat is just so much bigger when you know there are 300 people sitting and waiting to see what it might be. If there were only three, I guess I would be tempted to shut the whole thing.

Can you learn how to blog? Do you need to know a lot about computers? Do you have any advice for beginners?

Let's put it like this: While you may just start blogging, you will soon notice that you've got to get certain things right if you'd like to reach readers and keep them interested. About computers in particular you don't need to know a lot, although it helps if you are self-reliant and know how to use blogging software (easy to learn these days!). My advice for beginners?

1. Blogging should be fun, not a pain.
2. Don't try to please others too much, or blogging will become a pain.
3. Read other blogs and make constructive comments.
4. Answer comments that you get on your own blog.
5. Blog regularly, or you won't be able to build a steady circle of readers.
6. Rather post short, precise articles than long and extensive ones.
7. Don't worry about statistics and rankings too much.
8. The more original content you provide, the better. A blog that just repeats what everybody else says will bore readers sooner or later.
9. Be authentic, don't imitate. Role models may be helpful in the beginning, but after a while you should find your own style.
10. And because it's so important: Blogging should be fun, not a pain. If it does become a pain one day, take a break or be brave and shut your blog down.

Have you made negative experiences with blogging, too? What kind?

No, not with blogging itself. But there's annoying stuff that may come from it, like spam or advertising comments. There are good plugins that can help you with that, though.

Do you use twitter, too? Why (not)? What pros and cons do you see when it comes to twitter?

I've tested twitter for a while and it wasn't for me. Too much noise, and it really does kill your time. When you have plenty of contacts that are active on twitter (and I'd like to emphasize 'active'), it can make sense and be fun, though. As a blogger I get the feeling that since twitter, Facebook, etc. have come around, I get less comments. That's a definite con.

Which other female bloggers can you recommend? Why?

There are many, but I'll give you three:

"anders anziehen" by Smilla Dankert (http://anders-anziehen.blogspot.com) - just great, because it's authentic, friendly and stylish. [See GIRLS CAN BLOG Interview with Smilla here.]

"Kaltmamsell" (http://www.vorspeisenplatte.de/speisen) - authentic, crisp, brilliant

"thx thx thx - A thank you note a day" (http://thxthxthx.com) - because you can't say thanks often enough. Leah Dieterich says it in an inimitable, humurous and intelligent fashion.

Welche(n) anderen frauengeführten Blogs kannst Du empfehlen? Warum?

Kaltmamsell
(http://www.vorspeisenplatte.de/speisen)
- authentisch, knackig, gut

"thx thx thx - A thank you note a day"
